Sessions - Reflection (Insights and Actions) for mentors

Explore the benefits of MentorKey's Session feature. This guide explains how to use the Insights and Actions features to capture and reflect on post-mentoring session insights and track specific steps and goals. Elevate your session reflection with MentorKey.

What are Sessions - Reflection (Insights and Actions)?

Once you have had your mentoring session, you can use Sessions to reflect on your conversation, capture your mentee's 'aha' moments and ensure you and your mentee have clear steps forward to achieve their goal.

There are two available features you can use to achieve this:

  1. Insights
  2. Actions

Insights

What are Insights on MentorKey?

The Insights feature allows you to record any post-session insights or notes to ensure you have captured and can reflect on your mentee's 'aha' moments and keep track of what you have discussed in your sessions.

Logging Insights

Logging Insights in MentorKey helps you to keep track of your mentoring conversations and reflect back on the key insights you and your mentee have discovered. You may also log key points from your session to keep a record of your discussion. Although it's highly recommended that you do so, it is entirely optional, and you have the flexibility to choose whether or not to log your insights. It may be that your mentee logs their insights following each session and you do not feel that it is necessary for you to do so.

Sharing an Insight

Sharing your Insights with your mentee can be a valuable way for them to reflect on the conversation from your perspective and ensure they prioritise your any key insights and reflections as you continue to work together.

When creating an Insight, you can choose to share it with your mentee immediately or decide to share it with them afterwards. Sharing your Insights is optional.

Here is how to share an Insight with your mentee after you have created it

Heads up: Your mentee will be able to view your Insight and will receive an email notification prompting them to read your Insight

Unsharing an Insight

Here is how you unshare an Insight

Note: Your mentee will not be notified that you have unshared an Insight with them. You may want to notify them directly.

Finding your Insights

Here is how to find the Insights you have created

Finding Insights your mentee has shared with you

You may have received an email notification informing you that your mentee has shared an Insight with you. To access the Insight directly, simply click on "View Insight" in the email.

Note: If you are unable to find the Insight, your mentee may have unshared this with you. You may want to check with your mentee directly.

Alternatively, you can find the Insight on MentorKey.

Actions

This section outlines how to use the Actions feature from the Sessions page. If you want guidance on Actions from the Goals and Actions page click here

What are Actions?

Actions represent the specific steps that you and your mentee identify that can be taken to support your mentee in achieving their goals.

Actions may be assigned to a specific Pillar Goal in cases where the action is likely to progress the achievement of the pillar goal.

Logging Actions

Logging Actions in MentorKey helps you and your mentee maintain accountability for completing actions. Although it's highly recommended that you do so, it is entirely optional and you have the flexibility to choose whether or not to log your actions.

Creating and assigning Actions

Heads up: Actions that you create in MentorKey will automatically be shared with your mentee

When you create an Action, you will be required to assign it to either yourself or your mentee, to indicate who is responsible for completing it. Similarly, your mentee can create and assign Actions.

If an Action that you create is related to one of your mentee's pillar goals (i.e. is it an action that will help them to achieve a specific pillar goal), you have the option to link it to the relevant Pillar Goal.

Heads up: An Action can only be linked to a Pillar Goal if your mentee has created Pillar Goals

Here are two ways that you can create and assign an Action on MentorKey

  1. Creating an Action from the Goals page
  2. Creating an Action from the Sessions page

Actions can be created from the Sessions page if you or your mentee has created a Session in MentorKey and you want to record that the action was agreed upon in that session. This can be useful to refer to in your next session so updates can be provided on progress for each action.
